Abode. By Elenberg Fraser

302 - 324 Russell Street, Melbourne
Residential, Planning current, 2011

The "Abode" development located on Russell Street in Melbourne's CBD is a 55 storey residential tower, comprising of ground retail spaces, service areas and foyer space, above which are eight podium car park levels, the podium top with apartments and communal facilities and 45 levels of residential apartment floors with a total of 450 apartments.

The development presents a high quality addition to not only the CBD area but Melbourne as a whole. The generous full frontage apartments and bedrooms at an average of 65 sqm across the project in alliance with the communal areas provide a vibrant vertical community promoting a sense of neighborhood within the precinct and inherent social sustainability. The communal areas program includes swimming, fitness, spa and wellness. The podium top offers also lounge, dining and BBQ facilities for recreation and commercial needs of residents.

The tower design tries to explore the relationship between individuality and community. Individual rooms / apartments are exposed and identified in the vertical structure while a wave motion system ties the modules together to a larger community creating an undulating self shading facade. The bronze-pink glazing of the residences and the oxide green concrete create a beautiful warm natural relationship with the highly articulated car park screen towards Russell Street.
