Barnes House
By Stamberg Aferiat Associates
Respect an original vision of a venerated architect and advance it for a new
owner. This project, a renovation of and addition to the former home of
architect Edward Larabee Barnes, is a built manifestation of the design ideas
that represent his long and distinguished career. The pavilions he designed
reflect his masterful eye for form and his perfect sense of proportion. The new
owner of the house requested an addition that doubled the square footage of the
existing house without diminishing the strength of the original.
To answer that request, a monumental triangular screen wall, inspired by the
geometric form of Barnes' own addition to the original house, creates a
dialogue with the original. The screen acts as a dramatic backdrop to the
existing pure white original structure.
The corrugated aluminum sheathing of the triangle diminishes the scale of the
new addition by subtly reflecting the sky and the surrounding property. We
employed a limited palette of materials and utilized light, view, form and fine
detailing to create a variety of intimate and grand spaces suited to the
client's needs.
